only the first gen ps3 80gb can play ps2 games, the new one can't it will say right on the box if it does or does not, also the picture is different.

On the first gen, you will see an openable flap beside the place where you insert the disc, but on the new one you wont see that.

The current 80GB PS3 will not play PS2 games ! The only models that play PS2 games are as follows !

    20GB Model Number: CECHB01 (Near 100% compatibility)

    60GB Model Number: CECHA01 (Near 100% compatibility)

    80GB Model Number: CECHE01 (75%-85% compatibility)

The current 80GB PS3 no longer supports PS2 backward compatibility. If you want one that does, look for the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle (no longer being made) or one of the older 20gb/60gb ps3s. A good rule of thumb is if it has 4 USB ports then it will play ps2 games. If it has 2, then it won't.

no ps3 80gb will play ps1 or ps2 games the only way you can do it is by chipping your ps3 i do not think that you will do that becuase it will void your warranty

New PS3 systems won't play PS2 games. There's no crack/hack/patch/anything that will make them work.

They will play PSone games, from original discs or ones purchased through the Playstation Store.

Well it depends if your buying the newest model or the older one, the newest one can't, but the older one can.. So it really depends.
